After the passing of the late, great comedian Andy Kaufman in 1984, there were
those who believed that he had actually faked his own death and continued to
perform as his alter ego, lounge lizard Tony Clifton. These bizarre rumors were
further fueled by Academy Award winning director Milos Forman’s film “MAN ON
THE MOON” that starred Jim Carrey as Kaufman.
Last May, things got even stranger when Clifton performed sold out shows in Los
Angeles with the most hilariously heinous, politically incorrect act imaginable.
Luckily for us, cameras were rolling as strippers stripped, Tony spewed out
vulgarities that Howard Stern wouldn’t dare say, and his kick-ass band cranked
out everything from Rat Pack tunes to contemporary hits. When he tearily
and sincerely lit into R.E.M.’s Kaufman tribute “Man on the Moon”, more than
a few in the audience got a little choked up. We don’t know if Tony is Tony,
Andy, or somebody else altogether. We do know he’s one of the best goddamn
performers you’ll find.
Be the first to see a sneak peek of a concert film that:
“Makes Martin Scorsese’s ‘THE LAST WALTZ’ look like a piece of shit.”
“A sprawling performance… transfixing.”
“A figure so mesmerizing in his grotesquerie that his very existence becomes an
act of theatrical alchemy.”
- Entertainment Weekly
Tony himself will do a Q&A after the film. When asked if Andy Kaufman will be
there, Clifton was quick to reply, “ANDY’S DEAD! If you want to see Kaufman,
get yourself a flashlight and a shovel!”
